Stylish welcome for visitors

Visitors to Birmingham now have a stylish new tourist centre on hand thanks to the world leader of door and window control systems, GEZE UK, which supplied impressive glass entrance doors for the city’s main information point.

GEZE worked in conjunction with Solaglas, the largest distributor, processor and installer of glass related products and services in the UK to create the unique entrance system, which has more than 500 visitors per day passing through it.

Situated at the junction of New Street and Corporation Street, the state of the art centre designed by Birmingham City Urban Design needed entrance doors which opened smoothly and reliably but also reflected a sense of style to portray Birmingham as the attractive, forward thinking city that it is today.

Designed exactly to match the profile of the structural glazing, the GEZE SLV Prismatic sliding operator was supplied complete with Slimprofile framed bi-parting door leaves, made using 22mm double glazed units from Solaglass. With an opening width of 1170mm, drive unit length of 200mm per side and a prismatic angle of 68 degrees, the entrance is an impressive portal.

At just 70mm high, the discreet Slimdrive operator can easily drive door leaves weighing up to 120kgs each despite its compact dimensions. A unique LED programme switch features adjustable modes (off, one way traffic, reduced opening and fully automatic), and an electro-mechanical locking system is housed within the drive unit, energising when the programme switch is in the ‘night’ or ‘off’ position.

The doors are activated by two RK31 uni-directional motion detectors on each outer face of the operator, and one uni-directional motion detector is mounted internally. Flush mounted within the underside of the canopy section are three HZ-C ultrasonic presence detectors for increased safety within the threshold area. In the event of a power failure, a battery pack allows the doors to be opened or closed. Two full height protection screens can be pivoted for easy cleaning and maintenance.

GEZE matched Birmingham City Council’s specifications on this project, resulting in a safe, reliable and aesthetic entrance to a key centre for people visiting Birmingham.

Commenting on the project GEZE’s sales and marketing director Paul Gerrard said: “This was a flagship project for the council, and as such it needed to reflect the contemporary design-led renaissance the city centre is currently enjoying.

“Birmingham City Urban Design are committed to providing a sustainable environment through an innovative approach to its projects and we are delighted that GEZE has been able to continue that by providing high quality products that can be trusted to do the job whilst also delivering outstanding aesthetics.”
