GEZE Slimdrive SCR in the Scotch Whisky Experience in Scotland.

GEZE Tots Up Scottish Success

It's cheers all round at one of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations as the UK’s leading supplier of door and window control systems, GEZE UK, raises a glass to toast a successful installation at The Scotch Whisky Experience.

Architects Norman Gray and Partners specified GEZE's bespoke open top Slimdrive Curved Sliding automatic operator (SCR) to create an impressive and stylish cylindrical entrance to the Edinburgh-based attraction, inspired by the shape of a whisky bottle.

Situated next to Edinburgh Castle on the Royal Mile, it was important that The Scotch Whisky Experience’s new entrance respected and complemented the surrounding historical buildings, but architects were keen to incorporate an elegant and modern twist. The visually stunning all glass cylindrical entrance that resulted, will welcome over 250,000 visitors from across the world every year.

GEZE’s SCR was specified in order to achieve this effect, with its operating height of just 7cm, it can be installed almost invisibly and offers a 360º entrance solution without compromising the integrity of the glass facades. Combining aesthetics with functionality, the SCR has also been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M and assists with the vigorous demands of the DDA.

Commenting on the installation, The Scotch Whisky Experience’s managing director Alastair McIntosh said: “The Scotch Whisky Experience is a 5 star visitor attraction at the top of the Royal Mile and beside Edinburgh Castle. As part of a major investment programme, a cylindrical glass entrance feature incorporating double automatic doors, was supplied and fitted by GEZE UK. We’re delighted with the results, which blend a contemporary design with a traditional listed building dating back to 1887.”

GEZE is no stranger to working at high profile tourist destinations having previously worked for Dover Museum, Wollaton Hall in Nottingham and Birmingham Tourist Centre.

GEZE's UK specification manager, Paul Wyatt added: "We’ve plenty of experience working on high profile projects, but it is always a pleasure to be chosen to work on such a prestigious and exciting project as The Scotch Whisky Experience. Our innovative Slimdrive Curved Sliding operator is ideal for a wide range of applications so it was the obvious choice for the contemporary glass design of the entrance."
