restoration in existing heritage protected building

Architecture office: Koch + Partner, Munich

The Europe-wide competition for the restoration of the imposing, art nouveau Gutenberg High School building in Erfurt was won by the Munich architects Koch + Partner in February 2003. In November 2003 the foundation stone was laid for the 9.9 million euro restoration project. In the course of their project work, students of the high school got the chance to include their wishes for the restyling and extension of the building. They were advised in this by architects from the field of landscape, interior and exterior architecture. Since the formal transfer in August 2005, a wide, inviting, free-standing staircase leads up to the main entrance of the restored old building, which was connected crosswise with the flat, new construction in its historical central point. This cementing together of old and new facilitates generous and functional adjoining of the new lecture hall and the sports hall to the original building. A modern school centre has been created as a place of communication.

Once more it became clear in this significant restoration project how outstandingly well GEZE products can be employed not only for new buildings. Over 100 door closers as well as products from the fields of smoke and heat extraction (RWA 100E) and (RWA 105E) , ventilation and rescue route systems were employed in the new and old buildings.
